One day in August 2009 whilst at the Edinburgh Fringe I stumbled across two musicians on the Royal Mile entertaining the crowds with UFO shaped instruments. What were then ‘The Hang Playing Hedge Monkeys’, blew me away with their music. The sound and musical vibe of the Hangs they played touched me deeply in an emotional way like nothing I had ever come across before. I immediately knew that this was my instrument.
Always a musician in my head – these ‘steely wonders’ have changed my life in so many ways. Personally, as I have met so many interesting and truly wonderful people through being involved with them and the special community that surrounds them, and creatively as now I can share the musical thoughts that previously I had no way of expressing.
I need to thank many people whose friendship, inspiration and technical expertise meant that this album actually took shape.
Firstly to the people of Hebden Bridge. Living in this small beautiful Yorkshire town surrounded by the hardworking, mad, creative, free thinking and downright resilient and warm hearted folks that make it up, has been a constant inspiration and a reminder that you can live a creative and imaginative life outside the norm on your own terms and still thrive. Special thanks to Kath, Mark, Jayne, and Filo & Ed (my sometime trio buddies) for following their own paths with such energy - it encourages and inspires me to do the same.
Thanks to my Handpan family around the world. The open hearted, warm, funny and talented people that make up this community have changed my life in ways I could not possibly have imagined over seven years ago. Always willing to share knowledge, friendship, advice, and fun times they have restored my faith in human nature. Special thanks also to the hardworking makers who hammer steel for us, especially the talents at ACIEL, AYASA, Panstream and MERAKI who made me some beautiful instruments.
Love to all my Hangout buddies. Thanks especially to those who were so welcoming in the early days no questions asked and pulled me straight in to the madness – Sam Archer, Peter Berni, Kelly & Rob, Michael and Dominique Colley, Jimmy & Gillian and my ‘Hangout massive’ Rob V, Ruth, Rob J, Jorik, Chris, Ray, Alex, Marc, and especially Simon, and Emily (Millie) – you guys are amazing, talented and bonkers and I love you x
Thanks also to those virtuoso handpan players around the world who constantly inspire me – the musical world is richer with you guys in it.
A special mention goes to Kabeção, David Charrier, Archer&Tripp,
Dan Mulqueen and Lauri Wuolio. Your music tugs at my heart-strings.
I will always be grateful to Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer for having the talent, imagination and dedication to invent the ‘Hang’ and kick start this family of instruments. You changed our musical world.
Finally thanks to Andy Thornton for having a talented musical brain, nerd like timing and amazing ears.
I have loved my musical journey so far with this sound sculpture and hope you enjoy this first volume of my musical project.
